Applying Metalevel Argumentation Frameworks to Support Medical Decision Making

چکیده
People are increasingly employing artificial intelligence as the basis for decision-support systems (DSSs) to assist them in making well-informed decisions. Adoption of DSS is challenging when such lack support, or evidence, justifying their recommendations. DSSs widely applied medical domain, due complexity domain and sheer volume data that render manual processing difficult. This article proposes a metalevel argumentation-based system can reason with heterogeneous (e.g., body measurements, electronic health records, clinical guidelines), while incorporating preferences human beneficiaries those The constructs template-based explanations recommendations it makes. proposed framework has been implemented support stroke patients its functionality tested pilot study. User feedback shows run effectively over an extended period.

Metalevel argumentation
The abstract nature of Dung’s seminal theory of argumentation accounts for its widespread application as a general framework for various species of nonmonotonic reasoning, and, more generally, reasoning in the presence of conflict, whether such conflict arises given uncertain or incomplete information or as a result of differing opinions or preferences. In this paper we formalise reasoning abou...
متن کاملEfficient Argumentation for Medical Decision-Making
We describe the application of assumption-based argumentation (ABA) to a domain of medical knowledge derived from clinical trials of drugs for breast cancer. We adapt an algorithm for calculating the admissible semantics for ABA frameworks to take account of preferences and describe a prototype implementation which uses variant-based parallel computation to improve the efficiency of query answe...
متن کاملR-CAST-MED: Applying Intelligent Agents to Support Emergency Medical Decision-Making Teams
Decision-making is a crucial aspect of emergency response during mass casualty incidents (MCIs). MCIs require rapid decisions to be taken by geographically-dispersed teams in an environment characterized by insufficient information, ineffective collaboration and inadequate resources. Despite the increasing adoption of decision support systems in healthcare, there is limited evidence of their va...
متن کاملArgumentation and decision making ?
This paper summarises our position on the use of symbolic methods for reasoning under uncertainty, and argumentation in particular. Our view is that argumentation ooers a complement to numerical methods for reasoning about belief, and a general framework within which many competing approaches can be understood. In applications we have found that argumentation ooers a variety of beneets for prac...
متن کاملArgumentation for Decision Support
In this paper we describe an application based on a general approach towards modelling practical reasoning through defeasible argumentation. The purpose of the paper is to show how the incorporation of an argumentation component can add value to a collection of existing information agents. The example application is a system for reasoning about the medical treatment of a patient. An agent, call...
